SUBJECT and INSPIRATION

The influence of uniforms on the identity construction of the youth in communal events —— A case study on the Hong Kong Protests

As a symbolic code, uniforms are often used as inspiration by designers to explore identity and cultural expression.

An all-black ensemble has always been in fashion. But in Hong Kong’s protests recently , the look has become a polarising political symbol.(An all-black uniform — black T-shirts, black jeans and face masks, often paired with helmets, goggles and umbrellas)

But I don’t want to discuss the political meaning of uniforms. I want to analyze the cultural metaphor of black uniforms in this event from the perspective of the identity of the protesters. Whether this kind of uniform, as a “unified fashion” among the protestors, has become a kind of fetter and discipline in identity construction.

With the development of the protests and the escalation of violence, whether these young people are carried forward by the black uniform or not, under the oppression of group identity, they lose the meaning of individual identity.
